On a weekly basis, my students select a picture book from the classroom to bring home to read with their parents and then return to school. I have a limited number of books written in Spanish, so my Spanish-speaking students are not able to access the wide variety of high-quality books that are available to my English-speaking students. Furthermore, some of my Spanish-speaking parents are unable to read to their children when all I am able to supply to these children are books written in English. By supplying these students with additional books, students will be able to learn more vocabulary in their native language and also develop comprehension skills by hearing some popular books in both English (in the classroom) and Spanish (at home). Having more books written in Spanish will also give my Spanish-speaking parents a more accessible route to being involved in their children's early literacy development.
