During the holiday season, I am looking for several different toiletry (chap stick, tissues, etc.) items and on-the-go snacks for my students to pack in the requested gallon bags along with a note. The bags are then given to the students to pass out (with adult supervision) to a person in need. Prior to that, a lesson is conducted in class that includes the reading of Shel Silverstein's The Giving Tree. Photographs of the homelessness crisis affecting Atlanta are also shown to create a discussion amongst the students and teachers about how others live differently than we do and how we can be a positive change in the way they live. The purpose of the project is to give students early exposure to volunteering.Volunteering connects people to others, is good for the mind and body and most importantly, helps those in need.
