My students don't get a lot of chances in their daily life to see what their future can be beyond the cycle of generational poverty many of them are living in. Teaching engineering and programming through robotics exposes students to careers and fields that they may not have previously new existed. My students will use these Lego WeDO 2.0 kits to design, build and program robots as a team to perform specific tasks and complete challenges. My students are very excited to work with robots, but while robotics are a lot of fun they will also be building engineering, programming, math and problem solving skills. Having robotics kits to use in our club will bring STEAM to life for my students. In addition to the twenty-first century skills that it helps build, STEAM club and robotics have made my students excited to come to school again. Their enthusiasm for robotics and STEAM club translates to better attendance and engagement in school, which translates into better academic performance overall and a brighter future.
