Gifted students need challenges at their ability levels, which are above grade level. We need to provide curricula that engage higher level critical thinking skills, left and right brain activities, and project that keep kids wanting to come to school. An alarming statistic in New Mexico and national annual standardized test scores: gifted students consistently score in the same at-risk category as disadvantaged students. The common misconception is that gifted students will be OK, but clearly they are not. Because they often are not adequately challenged in the classroom, they fail to develop the deep critical thinking skills they will need in the “real” world. In my enrichment program at my school, my main focus is using a variety of methodologies and materials to teach strategies that will improve critical thinking skills. Critical thinking needs to be improved significantly for gifted students. As the teacher of our school's enrichment program, I am committed to delivering subjects and projects specifically intended to meet that need. These hands-on projects, specifically the robot kits, will meet that need. Please help us!
