The AP Art History test is one of the most rigorous, for the curriculum covers 250 famous works of art and architecture from around the world, from the ancient to the contemporary. Typically, my students have only been exposed to these works through pictures in their textbook. Some of them have never been to a museum, much less an art museum. The virtual reality viewers would enable my students to experience artworks in situ, as if they were there. While sitting in a classroom in Houston, Texas, they could walk through the Uffizi museum in Florence or go through the catacombs of Priscilla in Rome. They could climb Borobudur in Indonesia and wander the grounds of the Taj Mahal. They could feel what it must be like to be inside a Gothic church in England, awed by the flying buttresses, the stained glass windows, and the tall vaulted ceilings. Moreover, when they examine a key feature, they could click on a text bubble featuring more detailed information. Through the free Google Expedition app, I have access to amazing scenes and tours of landmarks from all across the world. By connecting to a common wi-fi network, the students could follow along as I "lead" a tour narrated with fun facts and questions along the way. A class set of virtual reality viewers would transform the AP art history curriculum from 2-D textbook photos to 3-D interactive experiences.
