Culture is an important part of a child's identity, especially in the first few years of their lives. My classroom is very ethnically diverse. I have students who are first generation American citizens, meaning their families come from places like Pakistan, Honduras, Somalia, and Mexico. It is important to me to ensure they that feel seen in our classroom and their culture is shared with their friends. My students are very creative and being able to supply them with various materials, such as the multicultural beads from around the world, help them to hold on to their culture. Art is important in all cultures and serves as one of the many creative outlets the kids can use to help share their culture and creativity. They can utilize the individual canvases to paint, allowing them to showcase their art around the classroom and our school art show. With the different craft sticks, jewels, easels, pieces of mosaics, and multicultural paper bodies, etc. the kids can get as expressive as they want and with your help, we can bring this to them.
