Currently, our music class focuses on rhythm as explored through bucket drumming. The only instruments we have are percussion, which means outside of singing, we are restricted to rhythm with no way to explore melody, pitch, harmony, or any of the other very important aspects of music. While rhythm has been a very worthwhile and exciting way to express ourselves, the kids are eager for more. They've been asking questions about playing instruments "that can play songs", and while drum beats are a fantastic way to be explore music, they are not melodic. Learning to play a melodic and harmonic instrument such as the ukulele will give these kiddos a new way to express themselves while also challenging and activating MANY areas of the brain. Music is an amazing part of the human experience. It teaches us empathy, collaboration, and creativity, among many, many other very valuable skills. Music demands higher level thought, attention to detail, and a great deal of abstract thinking, making it a very important part of our children's education. Research shows that some of the greatest benefits of music education are achieved by learning to play a musical instrument. I don't want my young students to miss out on these experiences and benefits of music just because they cannot afford instruments or music lessons at home. In fact, I believe that these kids need music more than ever as they work to overcome the mature challenges they are facing every day in life. Please help me make their world a better place... one melody at a time.
