My 8th grade class is focused on growing student leaders through peer mentoring, community service, digital literacy and student leadership. This unit is intended to build literacy while reading graphic novels with a diverse representation of leaders. We are requesting culturally relevant graphic novels about leadership and taking a stand! These books were carefully selected because they deal with individuals taking a stand while facing real life challenges. Topics include: civil rights movement, the Vietnam war, gender identity, immigration and race relations in the United States. These novels deal with difficult topics, but ones that the diverse learners in my school need a chance to explore and discuss in a safe and structured environment. This book study will give my students to have choice in their reading. They will work with groups to read and discuss the text. They will then develop a website to share summary and character analysis of the text and how they choose to take a stand in their own lives. I hope that this unit will enrich my students and help them to see themselves as leaders.
