Imagine walking into a classroom in which you are expected to read, a classroom in which you are taught to read and analyze challenging literature, a classroom in which is inviting and warm; yet, there are no bookshelves filled with the literature that you are dying to get your hands on. Currently, my classroom has no books. The only way my students get books is by frequently (often daily) visiting our school or public library, buying them themselves, or receiving them as gifts. I am asking for copies of 31 different books including El Deafo, Animal Farm and The Natural Order. If I am able to build a classroom library with high-interest and challenging books for my students, it will create an environment that is not only inviting and warm but one that encourages them to read and that shows them literacy is an integral part of this class and their growth as readers. It will show my students that I know and understand the trials and tribulations they face as middle schoolers, young adults, athletes, musicians, thespians, diverse members of society, etc., and that books can be their friends through it all.
