Every year, our graduating class of seniors are allotted a space in our school hallways to paint a mural that represents where they come from and where they are going. It represents each student's hopes, dreams, and achievements. They include images from their communities as well as history from their parents' and grandparents' native countries. The paintings reflect their roots as well as their futures. The block painted by each graduating senior leaves an echo of his/her footprint, inspiring incoming students of their own journeys ahead. I would like to provide this year's senior class with paints and brushes for their mural. As my students paint their stories with the acrylic paint, brushes, and palettes, it will remind them of how far they have come since they arrived at our school 7 years ago as a 6th grade student. The reflective nature of this exercise is a meditation on growth and possibilities. I would also like to provide my students with snacks while they paint because they are teenagers with fast metabolisms who are always eager for food between meals.
