I am planning to complete a literature study on Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Many of the students in my class have limited outside experiences and limited vocabulary understanding. The use of the book will develop their vocabulary and allow them to foster an understanding of a magical place. Through the use of quality literature, the world and it's surroundings can come alive. With the unit of study, students would benefit greatly from being able to see the Illustrated story as well as the concrete examples of creatures and items as described in the story. The use of the concrete items will foster creative writing and thinking activities, as well as continue to further student understanding of the story. The students in my class have limited experiences outside of school and cannot easily picture things presented in text form or make it come alive for them. The use of the concrete items in class as the story is presented will make it much easier for the students to understand and relate to them with their limited experiences.
