Mr. Merchant’s Classroom Edit display name

  • PS 95 Sheila Mencher
  • Bronx, NY
  • More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households

Your custom url is https://www.donorschoose.org/mrmerchant

After 19+ years of teaching in the Bronx (at the same school) my classroom has earned a reputation for being a rigorous and demanding environment of excellence where creativity and independent thinking can flourish. Students are welcomed with love and challenged to become stronger, smarter, healthier, and awesomer...yes, awesomer. The class is balanced between reading "classic" novels (not the boring ones) and contemporary literature, as well as peppering in news articles, short stories, poetry, and plays. As for writing, students are taught the structures of various genres but are encouraged to make the ideas unique and fresh instead of the cookie-cutter writing that so many are forced to learn. Sure we have a state test, but we're too busy being awesome to care. We hit the ground running because a glorious future awaits!
