A “safe place” is an area in the classroom students can go when they are upset or sick. We need a cozy and comfortable "safe place" in our classroom for many reasons. This area will provide a safe area students can go when they need time to themselves. Here they can lie down and relax to calm their bodies. They will be able to look at the rug, books, and the plush emotion flowers to help identify how they are feeling. Social and emotional skills are a huge part of the Pre-K curriculum. We help teach students to be able to name how they are feeling and how to control their feelings. A "safe place" is a wonderful asset to the classroom where students can learn self regulation. This year we have one student in particular that would benefit most from this area. He is Autistic and has trouble understanding emotions. When he is upset he screams and cries and doesn’t know what to do. Right now we will bring him to the teacher’s desk and have him sit in a chair. We give him a calming toy to squeeze and a feelings book. With teacher support it will eventually calm him down. With the “safe place” we will provide a more comfortable area that he will learn to go to when he is upset. Here he will learn new skills to calm himself down without teacher support.
