In my 20 years of teaching, I have grown the most in the last half of my career when my lessons have been recorded and I reflect on them. I give credit to the work I have done with foundations and grants in which I was given the opportunity to watch these recordings, able to see strong teacher moves, missed opportunities, and student thinking that I could not hear because I was instructing. I am hoping to get a Swivl so I can grow my mathematics practice, developing a program for Kindergartners that blends my best practices in both Cognitively Guided Instruction and Mathematical Modeling, while incorporating literature. By recording my lessons, I can improve my practice and share my lessons with peer teachers. By sharing the recordings, my personal successes can spread into other classrooms. Additionally, I would like to use it to record students while they present their work within our STEM program and publishings within Writer's Workshop. Most parents work and do not have flexibility within their jobs to take time off to observe in the classroom. Nevertheless, they want to know what their child is doing in the classroom and have opportunities to observe them at work. The Swivel will give me flexibility to not have to be behind the iPad for recordings, siding up next to my Kindergartners to scaffold their speaking skills. I can share the recording with parents using the SeeSaw app as well as growing the student's confidence in presenting.
