Do you remember reading novels in school and having that feeling of not wanting to put the story down? I want my students to feel this emotion in our classroom. The book I am requesting is the popular novel “Wonder” by R.J. Palacio. My goal would be to have each student have their own copy and we, as a class, could read together and complete a culminating project. My students attend a Title I school. It is difficult to ask families for supplies, let alone to purchase a novel. Therefore, a donation of a class set would be a dream for my students. If my students had access to their own novel, they would become fully engaged. It would be very distracting for me to read a novel aloud to a group of 30 students without having them follow along with their own text. With their own copy, they could bring the book home and we can take turns as a class reading the story. The genre is fiction, and there are endless activities that can be given for the story and each chapter. Reading is one of the most important subjects in school, and most students find it discouraging to read books that they are not interested in. However, since “Wonder” is a popular novel, I think the students will find it enjoyable and relatable to their everyday lives. About half of my students are reading independently below grade level and struggle with reading normally, but an enjoyable book and CD will make them feel positively towards reading.
