My students need to have opportunities to discover worlds of people, places, and events that are locked within the pages of books, such as Margarita Engle's stories of Cuba and Gary Soto's stories of Mexico. After the recent hurricane, my students need a safe place to get lost in a book and realize there is always hope! Listening to stories read aloud from award winning diverse authors is a way in which my students can feel their own struggles may also end in glory if they continue to work hard. My students need to feel safe and uplifted as they read about struggles and determination which they can personally relate. In the books selected they will share in multiple struggles, and determination which may inspire them in their own lives.
