Over the years, many of our students have wanted to take piano lessons, but our school district doesn't offer them. So I incorporated a piano unit in the seventh grade general music class. While we have ten keyboards that were initially purchased with a grant, our class sizes have increased to more than 30, thus the need for more keyboards. The piano unit was really successful and allowed students to bring all their years of general music instruction full circle and learn an instrument. By adding another four keyboards, it will help keep most of the groups to two students and ensure everyone gets enough time for practicing and playing. Every student deserves the opportunity to experience the joy of creating music, learning an instrument, and succeeding at something that is challenging, and fun! Many of our students are economically challenged and can't afford to rent an expensive instrument, pay for lessons, and spend hours practicing. By offering the piano unit in our 7th grade general music class, ALL of our students will eventually have a chance to learn an instrument and take those skills with them. While completing this unit on the piano, the students will learn about perseverance, self-esteem, confidence and collaborating with a partner; skills which any employer wants in a future employee. Thanks for taking the time to read about my project, and I hope that you will consider making a donation to purchase these four keyboards for our school.
