The students will participate in a WWII and Holocaust simulation in order to bring history to life within the classroom. For this project, I am requesting sketch diaries, paint, and tiles. Students will create a diary in the point of view of allied soldiers, home front workers, and Jews during the Holocaust in order to gain a stronger understanding of WWII. Throughout the diary, students will create sketches of important locations, symbols, and people that influence their life. This 6-week unit will end with a study of Terezin Concentration Camp and the children who inspired hope through their drawings and paintings. These artifacts were hidden in milk jugs when Nazis came around and were recovered unharmed after the liberation of Terezin. My students will celebrate the life of these Jewish children by painting butterflies that were found near Terezin Concentration camp during WWII. These same butterflies were found in many of the artifacts. We will honor not only the children from Terezin but also the 1.5 million Jewish children lost during the Holocaust.
