R.O.A.R. Reader’s Café (Book Club) will introduce reading to students as an interactive, social experience. The primary objectives for this project are (1) promote the enjoyment of reading as a recreational activity for struggling, reluctant readers in a supportive and stimulating environment, and (2) provide opportunities for these students to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to become life-long independent readers. A variety of activities will be incorporated to support students in meeting the goals and objectives of this project. The technology devices such as Amazon Kindle e-readers will allow students to have access to digital/audio books, internet resources, and other interactive applications to enhance student creativity. The Reading Strategies Book and The Writing Strategies Book will help to more easily develop my students into better readers and writers. The Jennifer Serravallo go-to books are short, engaging fiction and nonfiction texts by grade level that can be used for read alouds, whole class mini lessons, small group instruction, or used as mentor texts for individual conferring. One of the key requirements of the Common Core State Standards for Reading is that all students must be able to comprehend texts of steadily increasing complexity as they progress through school. Honey, I Love and Other Love Poems is a notable children's book that includes sixteen poems that tell of love and the simple joys of everyday life, seen through the eyes of a child. When students have access to books they enjoy, they’ll read and learn more. Creating a fun environment to read and discuss books is a great tool for fostering this goal!
