I can’t think of a tastier, more eye-catching fun-as-heck project than to teach students to print their own 3D designs in chocolate! We are much better at getting girls interested in STEM subjects like biology and chemistry, however, we are way behind when it comes to enticing them into engineering. In our first year, we spend a lot of time learning a 3D modeling software called Autodesk Inventor, and yes, it’s fun printing things in plastic. But I can’t think of anything that would be cooler than printing your own chocolate designs. I want to be able to wow the 8th graders (as well as those who are already in high school) into giving engineering a try. We are developing a reputation as a fun class because we print vinyl wall quotes for the whole school from one of our machines. I want us to be known as a welcoming place for all students – not just the boys. When I taught biology and chemistry, I found a secret weapon to get the girls interested. I taught them how to make soap and lip balm. It was enough to get them over the hurdle that my science classes weren’t completely boring. I think that chocolate 3D printing will be just the ticket to take the boring out of engineering. I just need to inspire them to meet with their counselors and decide to give engineering a try!
