Green Champions is an after school club that is focused on a sustainable future. We have several projects we are working on including reducing waste by reuse and recycling, educating our school's student population about energy efficiency and water efficiency. This spring we are planting a vegetable sampler garden. Gardens need a lot of water to thrive in Northeast Florida. We want to determine how many rain barrels per square foot of garden will be needed to keep our garden growing througout the spring and summer growing seasons. The rain barrels we have designed are inexpensive and do not require access to the school's downspout. By using rain water we are not only eliminating potable water consumption, but also saving the school money! This will be a challenge our club is excited about taking on and we hope that other schools, with their limited budgets, will be able to replicate our garden rain barrel strategy.
