According to a survey of over 3,000 young people and over 1,000 parents conducted by the Benenson Strategy group and sponsored by the Born This Way Foundation, "Young people with access to tangible resources are more mentally healthy. Furthermore, youth want to empower themselves with knowledge and skills to support their own wellness—and assist a friend who might be in crisis—but we need to do a better job providing those resources." It is with this in mind, that this project and this group has been developed. In taking a look at the discipline statistics in our school, we have found that a large percentage of our discipline referrals come from our 9th grade students, who are entering high school and trying to figure out where they fit in, and from our young ladies who are struggling with self-esteem, self-identity, and body image issues. Many of our physical altercations occur between students who identify as LGBTGQ. While many of our students identify as LGBTQ at school, they may not identify as such outside of school and may not have talked to their parents about their feelings. By requesting a library of resources designed for young people, the counseling department hopes to develop a curriculum that targets self-esteem, self-identity, self-acceptance, and positive body image while promoting a community that is inclusive of all of our students. This grant would allow us to purchase resources that will allow the counseling department to facilitate small group counseling sessions utilizing real-life situations and experiences from other students. These books and resources will help to tear down stigmas attached to teens and the issues that they face. They will allow us to reach a wider range of students and use hands-on tools to help them become their best selves.
