Graphic novels not only provide a bridge to what students already know to what they need to know, but they also assist students in building complex reading and inference skills. Maus is a graphic novel about the atrocities of the Holocaust. The horror of that time and the dehumanization of the Jewish people is difficult for many students to understand or visualize. Maus provides an opportunity for students to grasp this time in history in a way that they can understand. In the same manner, picture books provide students with a way to continue to build complex reading and inference skills and understanding. The picture book Greenhorn provides students with a way to understand the aftermath of the Holocaust and the struggles and heartbreak that many survivors faced once they were liberated from the camps.
