First Graders are beginning to develop the concept of community. The classroom is full of lifelong lessons in respecting one another and working together. Gathering close together to listen to stories, have discussions, and work together is an important ingredient in becoming a healthy learning community. Having time on a rug is also an effective way of engaging the attention of young learners whose bodies need a break from sitting at desks. The time spent on a classroom rug is rich in the learning both academic and social lessons. The children in my classroom have the added benefit of being in a community of many assorted ethnic backgrounds. Having a rug on which to gather and especially on that emphasizes the whole world as one community will enhance their appreciation of each other and provide opportunities to learn and grow as a classroom community.
