"A Monster Calls" is a novel that teaches students content that goes beyond what is written on the pages and teaches them how to express emotions in a healthy manner. The main character, Conor, is a young boy learning how to deal with his mother's cancer and inevitable death. In the beginning, Conor deals with his mother's illness poorly; however, throughout the novel, Conor learns how to deal with his emotions and how to express his feelings through verbal communication. This lesson is something that is vital for young adults to learn and master. By learning new coping mechanisms at a young age, they will be able to help themselves and others deal with troubling situations.
