If each student in the fifth and sixth grade have access to the book "Chains" by Laurie Halse Anderson, they will be able to note the descriptive language and vivid vocabulary the author uses. They will be able to mark pages (using sticky notes) that support their thinking. Students will also be able to follow along in their books while their teacher models fluent reading. An in depth study of this book will help students grow as readers. Exposing students to historical fiction will strengthen their comprehension skills. Since this book is complex, the teacher will model thinking and comprehension strategies, then provide space for students to practice these strategies. In addition, students will have a more in depth and personal view of the plight of a slave during the time of the American Revolution. This will help to broaden their perspectives and knowledge of history.
