Differentiation is important in being able to give students the information they need at their educational level. Every student is at their own level and my classroom varies from Pre-A readers to level S readers. Since I am a new teacher, I came in with a variety of books and I was able to acquire books from retiring or leaving teachers. My challenge is that most of my classroom's library consists of K-S leveled books and there are still more M-S books than there are A-J books. The problem with that is that my students are not getting the books they are in need of at their level. I provide and facilitate growths in independence for my students, but I am currently unable to give my students enough quantities and quality to choose books at their independent reading level. My goal is to help these students find their interest in reading, instead of stopping with words like, "I can't read." I want to have more options, more levels, and more content within the choices of books in my classroom. New books provide more opportunities that are torn, ripped, or out of date. These students are in need of these new leveled books to get them excited about reading, learning, and their futures so that they don't stay below level and get pushed through the grades. I intend to have these new books create additional opportunities and facilitate conversation for sequence of events, points of view, expression, and more comprehension topics.
