My goal is to give students time when they enter my classroom to get ready for their day. I don't believe that using worksheets as morning work to keep them busy is how any child wants to begin their day at school. When I first started teaching we had worksheets to color, write sounds, connect the dots, etc. and it became busy work more than learning. I imagine my students coming to school excited to get in their classroom because they are given the chance to create and explore while building relationships with their peers. I will use the manipulatives and activities to create morning baskets for my students to use every day when they come to school. We have a 20 minute period where the students are arriving from buses, cars, and walking. With these items they will be able to grab a work tub and a partner or two, and work together to create and play. The Design and Build Engineering Center will help students apply problem solving and engineering skills to real life situations. I love how these items have pictures of bridges and cars and the students can try to become builders and recreate these. The Giant Treehouse items will be great for imaginary play. Children learn a lot of social skills through play with peers. The gumball activity and the Don't Let The Bugs Fall help students practice fine motor skills to get ready for writing as well as how to take turns and share. Each item was selected to help my students. Play is an important part of kindergarten because they are learning social skills and creating meaning from those experiences. They are also figuring how things work and fit together, and these manipulatives will be great for that!
