Language acquisition theories highlight that students are better able to learn and understand a second language when they have well-developed language skills in their native tongue. For this reason, I want to provide my students with books in Spanish so that by reading they can further improve all four language skills, including reading comprehension, writing, listening, and speaking. I expect that this will not only strengthen their four language skills in Spanish but also improve their English language skills. My hope is to provide my students with a copy of each book so that for the first time in their lives they can begin creating a "personal library." I have chosen the books, "The Bread Winner" and "The House on Mango Street" because they both reflect experiences my students have faced and they emphasize the importance of resilience in the face of adversity. I also chose the book, "The Little Prince," because it discusses it provides a beautiful depiction of love and friendship and the personal conflicts that all adolescents confront.
