My elementary school students need access to a variety of literature inside of our art studio. This library will serve multiple purposes-for students who finish art projects ahead of time; for students who need some down time; and for students who have difficulty transitioning. A library in the art studio will offer the opportunity for children to read and refocus, as well as introduce vocabulary, build stamina and enhance social skills. Our school community is extremely unique. We serve the population of students in one of the poorest congressional districts in the Bronx, NY. Our school was designed for children in foster care and who receive prevention services as needed. The titles selected include The Day the Crayons Left, which is a colorful tale of what happens when color is absent. It is fun and entertaining. I've also selected favorites from Dr Seuss which will support our annual Dr Seuss celebration. We will create artworks based on his body of work. These stories support rhyme and rhythm, imagination and fantasy. The title El Deafo is a graphic novel which engages readers in a historical fiction account of what it is like to lose your sense of hearing which encourages empathy and self-confidence. Your generous support will aid in bridging the gap between inner city youths and their ability to create, imagine, socialize and communicate effectively!
