My students are very active 5 and 6 year old kids. They're bright and eager to learn. More than 80% receive free or reduced price lunches. About 90% of my students are learning English. Parents have shared with me that they don't feel safe letting their kids play outside in their neighborhood. Poverty and obesity go hand in hand. Our school is working hard to break that cycle. It promotes active living, walking or biking to school, and has not outlawed P.E.! Two years ago, we received some amazing and powerful teacher training for P.E. lessons. Unfortunately, we don't have funds to replace the equipment that was so heavily used. Kindergarten teachers work in teams of two to teach a formal exercise lesson to about 44 students at a time weekly. Lessons include: stretching; balancing with bean bags; practicing gross motor skills like skipping, hopping, jumping, and jogging; and strength builders like bear- and crab-walking. Our lessons are non-competitive and fun. They MOVE!
