I serve a diverse population of students that are largely military or low income. Due to the transient lifestyles many military families have, often my students have not previously had the opportunity to take piano and music lessons, and band is one of their first exposures to an environment focused on music performance. They are also coming from many different backgrounds and locations, and the band program gives them a "home" at school where they are able to flourish as young adults, not just as students. In the band room the students learn to play an instrument, perform alone and with others, and how to make and be friends with people from all walks of life. What important skills! Teaching in a smaller coastal community has its benefits and its challenges. One of the largest challenges is providing my students with the instruments and resources that they need on a very limited yearly budget.
