Having flexible seating options and fidgets will help my students with attention deficits be able to stay focused and on task within the general education classroom. My students are very intelligent and hardworking, but they often struggle with staying seated and paying attention for extended amounts of time. I want to help my students be able to remain in the general education classroom with their peers and succeed on third grade standards in math and reading. It is imperative for these students to be able to stay in the general education classroom and focus on learning. Furthermore, fidgets such as the Fidget Finger Squash provide an outlet for my students to fidget at their desk while remaining in their seat and without distracting others. Too often students tap pencils on their desk in order to get out "excess" energy but that can be distracting to others around them. I want to provide grade appropriate, quiet fidget opportunities that will help maximize the students' focus on instruction and activities. Also, the Bitty Bottom and inflatable disks will help students remain seated in class. Many of my students wiggle in their desk or even stand up the majority of class and wiggle. The older students get, the more inappropriate these behaviors become. I want to help my students be in the classroom without drawing special attention to themselves as "different", and I want them to not cause any distractions for other students. The incorporation of fidget devices and alternative seating choices will aid my students in being able to focus in class and be successful. As a special education teacher, it is my responsibility to help my students turn their disabilities into abilities and highlight their strengths over weaknesses.
