I teach a bilingual class in which the students are classified as mentally retarded. I have the unique opportunity for 45 minutes daily to teach these children with special needs their second language, English. Many of them are from low income homes, and some are even in foster care. These children enjoy learning when there are a variety of engaging activities. It is hard to accomplish this when there is no reading equipment in my classroom. They would enjoy manipulating letter tiles to create words and to sit on the rug listening to me read a story and “dissect” it on our new “mobile reading center” which includes a magnetic board and pocket chart to highlight key words.
