My scholars need more exposure to nonfiction text. Our curriculum does not give them regular opportunities to experience nonfiction text, and when it does it's often dry and hard to relate to. With enough exposure and practice analyzing nonfiction text, my students will continue to grow academically. My scholars need nonfiction exposure that reflects the real world. We will simulate an adults use of a newspaper or magazine by digging into Scholastic News to learn up-to-date and current things around the world. We will use the magazines to gain exposure to new vocabulary, as well as to practice skills used when using nonfiction text during testing. The nonfiction readers will not only help support an interest in nonfiction literature but will also be used to support comprehension and writing activities through the year. Having these books at a wide array of reading levels gives each student the opportunity to experience nonfiction at their own comprehension level. These books will support the idea that the highest and lowest achieving students can complete the same project but on the most specialized level possible.
