At our school, we want our students to be joyful and inquisitive learners who care for and contribute to their community. This motto is not only for the purpose of learning in elementary school, but a way of being throughout their entire lives. New Chromebooks for my classroom will help our students do just that. My students need access to more and better technology in order to help them succeed not just in elementary school, but as global citizens in a digital age. This technology will help them learn to find information and use it is a fun and collaborative manner. It is important for my students to not only work with technology on their own, but learn to use it as a collaborative tool to help them reach out and build upon their successes with others. My students will be working on developing and creating biographies of famous people throughout history. They will need technology in order to find reliable informational texts and sources. Throughout the unit, they will practice using these sources to determine multiple main ideas of a text and support those main ideas with details. As a culminating project, students will write their biographies using Google Docs and publishing their work for others to see. Their books will include non-fiction text features in order to make them more authentic and realistic. Using Google Docs will allow my students to collaborate on revisions with both me and each other. Additionally, publishing their books on the web will make the project more authentic and give it more purpose. My students use technology in the classroom a minimum of twice a week. It is my hope that providing more technology in the classroom will provide my students with the opportunity to be even more joyful and inquisitive.
