Who we are and how we respond and react to situations is a result of what we have encountered in our lives. Especially those defining moments where you have to make a difficult decision, learn from a mistake, overcome an obstacle or make a change. With sharing these experiences, we become more human to one another, and shrink the global community of which we are a part and begin to recognize that we have more in common than not. Through the use of Mentor Texts, my students will be able to share and write their own story. Personal narratives that explore these defining moments help to validate to others our experiences; a task that can be especially important as we learn how to advocate for ourselves. This unit will help engage my students by using a collection of teenage stories resulting in increasing their academic literacy scores while increasing their conversational vocabulary. We are hoping for these mentor texts to take us to the next level of book publishing!
