Math can be a tough subject to make engaging and interesting for my students. The concepts that third graders need to become proficient on are challenging and need to be taught in multiple ways. Teaching multiplication, division, or fractions through only direct instruction is not efficient and even more so, it becomes boring for the students. Having materials such as "I have, who has" cards for elapsed time, or a platform scale for weight measurement help students to engage with the concepts. When I'm able to place counters or cubes in my students hands they suddenly want to learn how to multiply or divide. My students all learn in their own unique ways. My goal is to teach math in a way that caters to all of those different styles. In order to do this, I need materials that I can put into my students' hands. They need to be able to touch and manipulate these materials to better understand math. Instead of just showing a child how to calculate elapsed time, I'll be able to put a physical clock in their hands and allow them to move the hands to figure out how much time has passed. These supplies will help my students to better grasp the concepts taught!
