My band kids are the students that every educator would love to have. Even though majority of the school and district is considered economically disadvantaged my kids are dedicated and enthusiastic about learning their instruments and music. This is the first year or the band being a comprehensive program with a concert band and now a marching band. The band participated in its first parades in February during Galveston's Mardi Gras celebration and has been selected to participate in San Antonio's Fiesta Flambeau Parade which is the nations largest illuminated night parade. We started the year with just 12 members in the marching band during football season and have now grown to almost 50 members. You may have noticed that I don't call them my students, but I call them my kids because we are a small but rapidly growing family that considers the band hall our domain and safe haven.
