This project would help turn a dirt pile into an inviting, friendly outdoor workspace where fourth-graders could relish their return to in-person learning. This classroom under the sun would thrive because students would be learning how to plant and care for native California plants, compost, and create and their own personal learning space. Studies show that outdoor education supports a students' emotional, behavioral, and intellectual development. Students will be responsible for the design, care, and maintenance of this space. Among other lessons, they will create job charts to distribute the work evenly, they will monitor the compost bins, they will research plant life native to California, they will create diagrams of space, budget their time and energies, and document progress with pictures and slide shows. I am excited about doing lessons on the caterpillar life cycle, as well as a nutrition lesson that incorporates some of their garden bounties! A garden is a space where all learners can be successful on some level. When the initial work is done, I can picture them enjoying a book amongst the butterflies, sharing writing in a natural backdrop, showing off to their kindergarten buddies, learning about the plant life, sharing the (hopeful) bounty of their labor, and so much more. To this end, we need potting soil, mulch, compost materials, a bird feeder, outdoor seating, and gardening tools. Your donation will help students see an outdoor space blossom and will inspire learning!
