The journey to class for many of my students involves taking in the sounds, sights, and smells of urban decay. My goal is to create an warm environment in the classroom that is conducive to learning. Students need a space that feels comfortable, clean, and safe. In order to reinforce our mindset and mission, students need a space that reinforces the importance of positive thinking and hard work. Yet we need to take it a step further and add warm touches that remind them that we, as educators, are invested for the long haul. This will be their home for the next 10 months. This home will be a positive one that is as clean and fresh as the ideas they will generate in class.
