Book clubs do not only teach them reading comprehension, but also serve as a space for students to engage in social emotional learning among their peers. Learning in small groups helps students create systems of accountability and trust, which ultimately builds real life skills that students can use behind the classroom. "My Bloody Life," is a real and relatable story for many 8th grade students. It is hard to find books that captivate the minds of students and that they cannot put down. My students have had great success with this book and they are in need of five more copies as well as Fist Stick Knife Gun: A Personal History of Violence to create a book club.
