My classes are made up of students from the United States, Ecuador, Dominican Republic, India, Brazil, Portugal, El Salvador, Colombia, Laos, Cambodia, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Mexico, Ghana, Peru, Bangladesh, Spain, and Honduras. Most are first-generation American and caught in a struggle between two cultures. Many don't get the support that they need at home as the parents themselves have very limited resources and little or no education. I think that my classroom doubles as a counseling center; many of the students that are in need feel at ease with me and come to me for advice or just to be heard. I can relate to them as I myself left everything in Puerto Rico, 17 years ago to move to Connecticut.
