Students with Autism benefit greatly from visuals! Concrete visual representations of items help our students learn vocabulary, transition throughout the school day, communicate, and access the curriculum. It is best practice to pair verbal instruction or requests with a visual. My students are foundational learners and they need real images or colored symbols to recognize visual items. Visuals and velcro are used in everything we do, from creating adapted books, to communication boards, to file folder activities. I am requesting colored ink for our printer to continue to create books, schedules, and curriculum materials. I am also requesting velcro to make these materials interactive for many of my students who are not yet able to write. We receive a limited budget for materials at the beginning of the year, and some of the items my students need most, like colored materials and velcro can be quite costly.
