The various crafting materials will allow my students to complete book reports and small projects to show their understanding/ comprehension of the book or topic they have been reading. My class responds well to "fun" activities. The anticipation of the upcoming project (creating something they can keep or show off) helps with student motivation to complete the readings and typical classroom work that goes along with reading and writing in English Language Arts classrooms. We will be reading "The Little Prince" in the near future and "Wonder" in the spring. I have planned lessons for the students to demonstrate their comprehension and understanding that will have them create the planets, scenes and characters in the book. These items will be displayed in the school. Students will each create a planet from the "The Little Prince" with foam balls, paint and clay. They will create character window clings with puff paint sets. They will create clothespin airplanes to hang along with stars (important elements in the book). Students will also recreate the final image of the book and a written response to art assessment with the canvas and paints. For "Wonder" students will create t-shirt Book reports to show their understanding with paints and fabric markers. They will also be using these materials to create a collaborative poster, interactive notebooks, peer compliment bulletin board, and creating an astronaut helmet magnets with the wood slivers, clay and paints. All of the above will help with visualizing the reading, comprehension, and motivation.
