My 24 third graders are learning to love reading by choosing books at their "Good Fit" level. One of their favorite times in the day, is silent reading time. They choose the books and where they want to sit. After that, they are lost in the adventures found in their books! I get a kick out of hearing a reader giggle when a character does something funny, or jumps up to share with me the exciting event that just happened in their book. You can see the love for reading when that happens The scholars in my room are a diverse group of learners who come from a low socioeconomic background. Most students are on free and reduced meals. They come into 3rd grade reading 1-2 years below grade level expectations, but leave reading at or near grade level. This happens because they work hard everyday to improve their reading and academic abilities.
