Students use numbers every day in life and in the classroom. Building an understanding of basic mathematical skills in kindergarten through second grade helps students as they attempt higher level math in later years. Teachers need to demonstrate the correct way to use manipulatives to all students and give visual representations of concepts as they are explained. The students must use a manipulative to show how they understand or represent a number. The manipulatives will be used daily in small group teaching, centers and independent learning so the students can combine and separate numbers using ten frames and rekenreks. This will help them see that all numbers are made from different combinations of numbers, and this is what paves the way for addition, subtraction and place value.
