I teach science at our school's new T-STEM Academy, a program implemented by the state of Texas to promote STEM in public schools. T-STEM Academies are rigorous secondary schools focusing on improving instruction and academic performance in science and mathematics-related subjects and increasing the number of students who study and enter STEM careers. At Wagner HS we are a Title I school where 91% of the students are minorities and 72% are economically disadvantaged and qualify for free or reduced lunch. The STEM program targets at-risk students and has no enrollment requirements, so my students come from all backgrounds. My goal is to follow the STEM blueprint and teach in a way that requires critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity. My students spend most of their class time designing and creating solutions to problems so they are gaining knowledge in a truly meaningful way.
