It is no secret: in order to succeed in schooling, one must be able to read and comprehend a wide variety of texts. Too often, students do not have access to books that they truly enjoy reading. Instead, they are expected to be glued to a book that they do not have the slightest bit of interest in. This disinterest in reading leads to a lack of motivation across the board, which results in students reading less, as well as putting forth less effort, culminating in lower student achievement. If students do not hold the necessary skills for literacy, then they are in severe danger of falling behind in school. But, if students are reading books that they find compelling, they are more likely to develop both skills and an enjoyment of reading. This is especially true of students from low-income backgrounds: The most successful way to improve the reading achievement of low-income children is to increase their access to print. That is what the purpose of this project is: to get high quality books in the hands of my 28 students. The addition of high quality, popular texts in my classroom will almost certainly increase student enjoyment of reading. I would love for you to help play a part in supporting the growth and development of my students.
