It is imperative that students have books to read at their own independent reading level. It's also critical that they have choices so they can read books they enjoy. Providing that for students will give them a greater likelihood of becoming lifelong readers. I firmly believe having a large classroom library is fundamental to not only learning to read well but for the LOVE of reading! It gives students easy access to books and more options. Therefore, the more books we have, the better. I have tested each of my 95 students individually in order to insure that the student and I know exactly where their strengths and weaknesses are in reading. This also helps them to know how to choose the right book for them. They have the discernment and drive, and now all they need is the books.
